Linear Infrastructure - Transmission Line

Streamline access planning for a 180km transmission line with 360 visuals on Swyvl.

When planning a new high-voltage transmission line spanning 180km, a project team faced the challenge of scoping access across varied and remote terrain, including sections of protected national park. The team needed a way to assess the condition of the access track and plan for transporting large equipment to the site—all without requiring frequent site visits.

The solution was simple yet effective. Attaching an Insta360 X4 camera to the bull bar of a 4WD vehicle, the team drove one of the more challenging sections of the track, capturing 360-degree photos at regular intervals. These images, combined with a GPX file, were uploaded to Swyvl as a Path View, creating a virtual tour that was automatically geolocated and mapped.

About the Project

  • Length: 180km of new transmission line.
  • Terrain: Rugged and remote, including national parkland.
  • Objective: Enable remote access planning for engineering teams.

Key Benefits of Using Swyvl

  • Visual insight into tricky sections: Tight turns and steep inclines were easy to spot, helping the team plan truck routes.
  • Track condition documentation: The visual record ensured the track could be remediated after construction.
  • Collaboration made easy: Team members who hadn’t visited the site could still understand the conditions and provide input.

One of the engineers noted, “Having a virtual view of the track saved us multiple site visits and made planning much easier for the whole team.”

By integrating Swyvl into the early planning stages, the team simplified their workflow, saved time, and ensured a smoother execution of this complex project.
